By using sequences of keys rather than one-word-one-picture, you can gain efficiencies of representation.
The power of sequencing can be demonstrated mathematically simply by considering a keyboard with N locations. If you use each location for one vocabulary item, your total possible vocabulary size is also N.
However, if you say that you can use two keys to represent each word, you then have a potential vocabulary of N2. So for a keyboard of 32 keys, you can have a vocabulary of over 900 words.
