The English alphabet contains 26 letters. With these, I can generate any sentence I want. Flexibility is high. However, there is a trade-off in that it takes a long time to spell words out, especially if you also have motor difficulties.
One method of reducing keystrokes is to use a ‘Word Prediction.’ This is where you type a word on a keyboard and you are presented with a number of possible words that you may be trying to access.
But reducing keystrokes may NOT increase speed of speech production. ‘Keystroke rate’ and ‘speech rate’ are two different things.
There is one other obvious limitation with letters - you need to have or be developing literacy. And you also need to be using a synthetic speech device, not a recorded speech device, because you cannot blend recorded phonemes together.
