Working with Paint

Paint is a piece of software that is included in with Windows 95 and Windows 98. It is a simple program that allows you to change certain types of graphic files or to draw your own.

Paint program window on opening

When you open paint, you see the window above, with the graphic tools on the left and colors along the bottom.

Paint tools

The Tools all do different things as listed above.

When you OPEN a file, you may need to change the FILE TYPE in order to see what files you have available.

Paint's open file dialogue box

When you are working on a picture, you may find it helpful to enlarge the image. You can do this from the VIEW menu, going to the ZOOM… option and then choosing ‘Large Size.’

Choosing zoom option in Paint

When you SAVE a file, Paint will save as BMP by default, unless you use the SAVE AS… option, as illustrated below. Then you get a choice of the file type. You might want to change depending on how you want to use the picture. For example, if you intend using pictures on the web, you need to save in GIF or JPEG formats.
