Words Strategy

The only way you should have the 'Words Strategy' MAP on your device is if you have upgraded to the Pathfinder from a previous device that was using 'Words Strategy.' When you buy a new Pathfinder, tell the folks at PRC Sales that you want a 'Words Strategy' overlay for it and you'll get one free.

The only problem you might have is that there are two different overlays available and you need to choose the right one! The reason for having two versions is that there was an older version for Liberator I and a newer version for Liberator II that had Word Prediction.

Here's how to work out which Pathfinder overlay you need:

1. If your current Liberator overlay is SS132 (printed along the bottom right-hand side of the overlay) the new Pathfinder overlay is 13358. Otherwise, if your current overlay is 11753, the new Pathfinder version is 13359.

2. A second check is to look at where the SPELL/MINSPEAK key is located. If it is at location N1, then you need replacement 13358. Otherwise, if it is at location C1, you need to ask for a 13359.

Can I use my current Customized Overlay?

If you have modified your Words Strategy overlay, then an original from PRC would need to be similarly modified. However, you could try another option.

Make a color photocopy of your current overlay on LEGAL PAPER at 95% of the original. Most copiers will let you set them for a 95% copy. If not, ask the nice people at somewhere like "Kinkos" to do this for you.

Cut out the overlay of the 95% copy and it should fit on your Pathfinder. Turn up the Icon Prediction in your "Feedback Menu" just a notch and the lights should be visible through the overlay - no need to punhc 128 holes.

Loading Words Strategy into Pathfinder

If you currently have Words Strategy and want to put it into your Pathfinder, here are the steps to follow. It isn't difficult, you just have to be aware of what you're doing.

1. Save your current Liberator contents to disk using you MTI program. This file is the one you will load into your Pathfinder.

2. Connect your Pathfinder to your computer using the MTI cable and run the MTI software.

3. Make sure the "Pathfinder" option is selected in your MTI software:

4. Click on the box to transfer from COMPUTER to the PATHFINDER:

5. On your Pathfinder, go to the TOOLBOX, select "Transfer Memory Menu" and then "More Items" to get to screen 2. You will see the following:

Pathfinder Transfer Memory Screen

6. Select the "Load Liberator MTI File" option. This will open up a window on your computer that let's you find and select the file you are going to load.

MTI file choice window

7. Hit the "Restore" button and the Liberator MTI file will be loaded into "User Area 1" of your Pathfinder. Oh, and just before it loads, your Pathfinder will give you a warning that this will erase your current memory from the device.

That's really it. If there are problems, they are likely to come during the transfer or once the vocabulary is loaded.

If you get an error message during the transfer, don't panic! Check the following:

  • Do the BAUD RATES of the MTI program and the Pathfinder match?

  • Is your SERIAL KEYS option turned OFF in the "Accessibility Options" of the Windows Control Panel?

  • Is your Pathfinder connected to the Comm Port of your computer?

Check your "MTI Manual" for details of how to make sure things work for your device and computer.

Once the vocabulary is loaded, you may get some errors in sequences that use MACROS. The one that will always happen is with some of the verb and noun endings. You can fix these using special Pathfinder macros.
