Rule
of Thumb for Memory and Text
A "Rule of Thumb" is just a handy way of making an estimate.
It is not 100% accurate, but it does allow you to make quick and dirty
comparison. For example, a useful Rule of Thimb in Time Management is
that you spend 80% of your time on 20% of your work - its called the 80/20
Rule.
When calculating the amount of memory used to enter text into a Notebook,
I assumed that (a) the average word is 5 letters long, (b) each word includes
a space after it, and (c) each character is one byte of memory. So, 30K
= 1000/6 (words per byte) * 30 = 5000.
If you are German, where the average word is around 50 letters long,
you need a different Rule of Thumb!
